AIIMS demanded in Lakhimpur

By Correspondent

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, March 8 The setting up of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the State, as proposed in the Union Budget, has been demanded in Lakhimpur district.

The demand was made in a public meeting attended by prominent citizens, political and social organisations of the town. In fact, this demand was made in October 2014 before local MP and Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal through a memorandum which was forwarded to the Prime Minister. Organisations like Lakhimpur Traders Association, Lakhimpur Citizens Forum, the Lakhimpur unit of NCP, MASS, etc., made this demand citing the geographical location of the district which is 400 km away from Gauhati Medical College. Further one has to cross the Brahmaputra river to reach the Assam Medical College at Dibrugarh.

It may be mentioned that in 2011 a declaration was made to set up a medical college in North Lakhimpur and the foundation was laid in the Civil Hospital here. But till date nothing has been done in this regard. Therefore, the people here now want the AIIMS in the district for the greater interest of this frontier district.
