BONGAIGAON, Aug 21 - A total of 371 inmates of a relief camp at Chhoto Nilibari in Chirang district have lost everything to the fury of the Aie river in the recent floods. These unfortunate residents including women and children who have been lodged in the camp since August 13 evening are the residents of Dababil, a village located on the other side of the Aie river.
They got ration on August 14 and 15 from the district administration. The ration they got included rice, pulses, mustard oil and salt. Lactogen and biscuits were provided to the babies.
Around 1100 mosquito nets had also been distributed among the inmates, but the space in the camp was not at all sufficient to fit all those mosquito nets. As the camp has been built with tin roof-sheets, it becomes hot during day time and at night due to congestion and space constraints, the situation remains the same, a senior inmate Dhiren Chandra Ray (70) said.
Due to the latest wave of floods, the residents of Dababil lost over 600 bighas of lands including cropfields, Ray said.
Two schemes were sanctioned to protect the villages situated besides the Aie river from its flood and erosion but the district and BTC administration had failed to implement the project in time and as a result many villages had to face massive damages inflicted by the floodwaters of Aie river, the inmates alleged.
Since childhood I have been witnessing the fury of Aie rivers flood. We had to shift our home six times. This time I have lost 17 bighas of croplands, but despite our repeated pleas, no concrete steps have been taken by the Government as yet to protect our villages, Dhiren Chandra Ray rued.
The legislator from Sidli of the BPF party visited the camp recently and helped the workers of Patanjali Yog Peeth distribute food items among the inmates.
The former Speaker of BTC, Paniram Brahma also reached the camp with Sri Sri Ravi Shankars Art of Living group to distribute food items to the inmates. Former ULFA leader Pranjit Saikia and his associates also visited the camp with his group.
