By Bureau

DIBRUGARH, Dec 14 - The Dibrugarh district administration today handed over a cheque for Rs 1 lakh to the 87-year-old widow of Dr Mahendra Bora, former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and ex-emeritus professor of the Dibrugarh University.

Dr Bora passed away a couple of years ago and ever since, his family has been facing financial problems. His widow a writer in her own right is not keeping well. A son and a daughter of Dr Bora have serious health issues, and require immediate specialized medical care. Dr Boras younger son has been unable to afford the mounting medical costs. The cheque for Rs 1 lakh from the administration was handed over this afternoon by the Circle Officer of the Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle, Dipu Kumar Deka.

Last year, the Dibrugarh University authority handed over a similar amount to the family on humanitarian grounds. Varsity teacher and staff unions, too, had earlier made smaller donations to the family.

The Dibrugarh University had also arranged for the free eye treatment of Dr Boras widow. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also paid Rs 1 lakh from his fund to the family last year, according to his personal aide, BK Saikia.

In a related development today, the owner of the local Sanjeevani Hospital, Pulin Gogoi has announced that Dr Boras family members would be provided free medical treatment from his side.
