NEW DELHI, Oct 12 - A team headed by AICC general secretary Harish Rawat is scheduled to hit the campaign trail in Assam from October 14.
Party sources said that the AICC team, besides campaigning for the party, will also gauge the mood of the party leaders and workers regarding the functioning of the PCC.
As reported, the AICC had drawn up a panel of five leaders for the post of Assam PCC president. Congress president Sonia Gandhi had held wide ranging discussions and the party is reported to have zeroed down on Bhupen Bora as APCC president, sources revealed. However, the change may not happen soon as the party is trying to evolve a consensus on a single name.
The panel of names included Congress Legislature Party chief Debobrata Saikia, Lok Sabha MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Gaurav Gogoi, senior leader Paban Singh Ghatowar besides Bora.
Bhupen Bora, who has experience of working in the AICC headquarters and who also belongs to Rahul Gandhi�s camp, is known to maintain a low profile and faces no major dissidence within State party.
The AICC is also planning to effect a change at the top following a review of the party�s recent performance. In the process of gearing up of the party units in the Northeast the AICC general secretaries may also be changed, said sources.
Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi for instance was made in-charge of Manipur and Tripura. However, following protest by a section of party leaders, the appointment was reversed within 24 hours and he was made in-charge of Sikkim and West Bengal.
Sources said that in all likelihood Lousiano Felerio, AICC general secretary of all the NE States barring Assam, is also likely to be changed. As it is, Manipur and Tripura have had been taken away from him. The AICC, however, later reinstated Felerio as general secretary of Tripura. This led Tripura PCC chief Pradyot Deb Barman quit from the party post.
The AICC top leadership had on September 13 this year decided to strengthen the North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC) and set up a permanent base in Guwahati. Moreover, the NECCC meetings will be held by rotation in all northeastern States.
The move is seen as a step to counter the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) floated by the BJP-led NDA.
