AHSEC to start Bihu as an elective subject from 2020

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 10 - The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) is going to introduce Bihu as an elective subject for the higher secondary curriculum from next year. Students choosing Bihu as their elective subject would have to appear for a 100-mark question paper, which would have both theory and practical segments.

AHSEC organised a workshop with a number of Bihu experts and academicians to chalk out a roadmap for the same as well as to deliberate on the contents of Bihu textbooks and decide on the curriculum and syllabus.

It may be noted that Sattriya dance is already an elective subject in the HS Arts Stream.

Considering the popularity of Bihu and the need for imparting its proper knowledge among the younger generation, we have decided to introduce it as a full-fledged subject. Different segments of Bihu including the dance, the instruments like Bihu dhol, pepa, gogona and the Bihu naam etc., would find a place in the curriculum, AHSEC Secretary Kamal Jyoti Gogoi told The Assam Tribune.

Though the Council is yet to decide on the mark segregation between theory and practical, the practical aspect would get its due importance, he said.

We are getting lots of suggestions that since practical knowledge of Bihu is of paramount importance, it should carry more marks. We would soon finalise it and roll out the course from 2020, Gogoi said.
