GUWAHATI, Sept 9 - The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) has decided to clampdown on unauthorised junior colleges that have mushroomed across the State.
AHSEC Chairman Dr Dayananda Borgohain today ordered an inquiry against seven such colleges, which are Kamrup Metropolitan College at Sonapur, Dr Bhabendranath Saikia Senior Secondary School and Sikshadoot Gopinath Sarma Junior College at Khetri, and Vinayak Academy, Sri Nivas Academy, Gyanam Academy and Akansha Junior College at Jagiroad.
�We are not going to allow anyone to toy with the system. The inquiry would be completed within a week and necessary action would be taken accordingly. We are soon going to launch a statewide drive against unauthorised junior colleges,� Dr Borgohain said.
It is noteworthy that mushrooming of unauthorised junior colleges has created anarchy of sorts in the education sector in the State. It was an RTI application that shed light on the malpractices adopted by the founders of a section of educational institutes at the time of their establishment.
Dr Borgohain further stated that they have received information about 60-70 such junior colleges across the State and most of them are offering higher secondary courses in the Arts stream.
�Verification of their documents will be carried out by a team of prominent educationists of the State. If irregularities are detected, we will immediately close down these institutions and their students will be transferred to nearby government higher secondary schools,� the AHSEC Chairman said.
The council has also initiated an inquiry into the allegations of corruption levelled against its deputy secretary (inspection) Ranjan Das. The inquiry will be conducted by a five-member committee, which will submit its report within a month.
Moreover, the AHSEC will hold a meeting with all the stakeholders shortly to take their opinion on a proposal to exclude Alternative English from the list of Modern Indian Languages (MIL) and also on whether to do away with the practice of announcing rank holders in the higher secondary examination.
