AHRC seeks police report on whether SC guidelines were followed

GUWAHATI, Jan 2 - The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) today asked the Director General of Assam Police to submit a report on whether the time-honoured guidelines issued by the Supreme Court were followed when Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi was arrested and produced before the court recently.

Based on a news report about the arrest of Akhil Gogoi who was produced before the NIA court under handcuffs, the AHRC also registered a suo moto case.

Moreover, the District Magistrate of Kamrup (Metro) today ordered a magistrate-level probe into the death of Abdul Alim and Dipanjan Das in police firing during the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

Abdul Alim, who hailed from Barpeta district, sustained severe injuries on December 12 during firing in Lalunggaon area here amid the protests. He breathed his last at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on December 15.

Amid the massive public protests against the Act, 18-year-old Dipanjal Das from Chaygaon sustained bullet injuries at Lachit Nagar here on December 12 and breathed his last the same day at the GMCH.

The District Magistrate entrusted Additional District Magistrate Manoj Kumar Sikaria to probe the death of Abdul Alim and asked him to submit his findings within 15 days. Additional District Magistrate Bipul Kumar Das has been entrusted to probe the death of Dipanjal Das and has been asked to submit the findings within 15 days.
