By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 11 Taking suo moto cognizance of media reports about suicide of a farmer named Madhu Bora (26) of Salaguri village in Sivasagar district, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has issued notice to the District Magistrate, Sivasagar, to cause an effective inquiry into the incident and submit a report within 30 days of receipt of the notice.

The media reports on September 10, 2014 stated that the suicide was a result of depression allegedly due to his land coming under acquisition by the Government of Assam in 2012 for establishing the Assam Rajiv Gandhi University of Co-operative Management at Demow Pathar near Joysagar in Sivasagar district. The State government acquired nearly 250 bighas of paddy land for the purpose.

He had reportedly hanged himself from a tree on September 8, 2014. A similar case of one Ratneswar Bora of Gadadhar Nagar of Joysagar in the district has also come into light, who had taken a similar path allegedly for the identical cause, after failing to receive compensation for his land acquired by the government for the same purpose, said a statement from the AHRC.
