GUWAHATI, May 29 - Taking suo moto cognizance of a news item, the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has issued a notice to the Deputy Commissioner, Chirang district to cause an inquiry into the alleged incident of police assault on a doctor in Chirang district.
The Deputy Commissioner has been asked to submit detailed report on the incident before the AHRC within a month of receipt of the notice.
The news which appeared in The Assam Tribune on May 27, 2020, reported that Dr Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC was not just assaulted by a police team but was also made to kneel down for not wearing masks. Two other persons were also assaulted in the incident.
It need mention here that officer-in-charge of the Amguri Police Station of Chirang district was reserve closed in connection with the case for �dereliction of duty.�
�According to the news item, the Dr Kakati had returned from a COVID-19 screening drive and was searching the keys of his room when police team arrived at the spot and started abusing him and, thereafter, although the doctor apologized for not wearing a mask, the police team did not pay any heed to the doctor and started beating him along with two others,� the AHRC stated.
