AHRC directs enquiry against police officer

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 31 - A full bench of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has recommended a departmental enquiry against sub-inspector Abdus Ali, the erstwhile in-charge of Suntali Police Outpost under Boko Police Station currently posted at Fancy Bazaar outpost, for violation of human rights.

As per AHRC Case No. 2773 of 2019-21, sub-inspector Ali was found to be at fault for some lapses in a dowry-related death case in Goalpara district in 2018.

The rights panel observed that Section 173(2) CrPC mandates that every investigation shall be completed without unnecessary delay. Section 173(2)(i) further provides that as soon as the investigation is completed, the officer-in-charge of the police station shall forward the police report to the magistrate empowered to take cognizance of the office. It said the charged officer had admitted that the chargesheet already prepared by him was retained by him even after a year of his transfer from that police station.
