GUWAHATI, July 19 - Dr Justice Aftab Hussain Saikia, Chairperson of the Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC), has been appointed as the Chairperson of Meghalaya Human Rights Commission by Governor of Meghalaya, V Shanmuganathan.
Justice Saikia, former Chief Justice of High Courts of Jammu & Kashmir and Sikkim, would be heading the first Meghalaya State Human Rights Commission along with PJP Hanaman, IPS, retired Director General of Police, Meghalaya, as the non-judicial member of the commission.
Justice Saikia is the chairperson of the AHRC since December 1, 2011, and would complete his five-year tenure in November, 2016. Till then, he would be heading both the commissions, as per the provisions of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
