DIBRUGARH, July 25 - Agricultural scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra here have been advocating use of environment-friendly biological pest control measures to contain crop pests.

According to Hemchandra Saikia, an expert in Agricultural Economics, adoption of biological control of crop pests can reduce environmental pollution and protect beneficial insect pests for the betterment of farming community in particular and betterment of mankind in general.

Hemchandra Saikia along with other agricultural scientists Sanghamitra Sharma and Tilok Malaka today demonstrated among the farmers the use of environment-friendly biological pest control of rice pests at the No.. 2 Charaihabi village under Barbaruah block.

Hemchandra Saikia in his address to the farmers said that as they continue with crop cultivation for food security and economic stability, effective steps should be undertaken in right time and right place to minimize the use of pesticides and chemicals giving larger emphasis on suitable use of biological control of pests for different crops to the extent possible because over the years the injudicious use of chemicals and pesticides have caused alarming threat to the environment.

Again there is a growing demand for organically produced agricultural crops in the entire world. So our farming community must go for biological control of pests in order to be an owner of sound health through sustainable agricultural practice, said Saikia.

Sanghamitra Sharma, an entomology expert, demonstrated the use of biological pest control strategies against rice pests like rice stem borer and leaf folder with the use of pheromone trap and use of neem oil spray. The trio scientists also explained other means of eco-friendly rice pest control measures like use of T shaped bamboo technology through which various birds used to eat various pests of rice by sitting in the T fitted in the rice field. They also urged farmers to go for multiple crop cultivation to enhance their total farm income in order to lead a respectable standard of living.
