SILCHAR, Aug 23 - Dr KM Bujarbaruah, Vice-Chancellor of the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) at Jorhat has said that efforts are being made to open an agricultural college in Barak Valley in the next financial year with a view to tap the rich potential of agriculture production here.
�Barak Valley has tremendous prospects in agricultural production. Also around two per cent students turn up to the AAU from here. Hence realising the need to tap the resources, we are in consultation with the Government to come up with an agricultural college in Barak Valley,� Dr Bujarbaruah said while delivering a talk on �Doubling Farmers Income by 2022� at the meeting on �Sankalp se Siddhi: New India Manthan� organised jointly by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Cachar and the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) on Tuesday at the District Library auditorium here.
Dr Bujarbaruah said that once the college is set up here (hinting at Karimganj), research work and studies on agriculture will get a fresh boost and young aspirants can be attracted to this branch of study. �We shall start with an agricultural college for now. Later, a fishery college might also be set up in Cachar district,� the Vice-Chancellor maintained.
He also added to say that an agricultural cabinet with cooperation from other departments like the Water Resources and Irrigation can help boost this sector a great deal. Also, steps should be taken to analyse and assess the income of the farmers in order to achieve the dream of a new India by 2022, he said.
On the other hand, former Union Minister Kabindra Purakayastha, who was the chief guest of the meeting said �like we took oath to throw the British out of power in 1942 and achieved freedom in 1947, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is asking every Indian, and farmers in particular to resolve to fight the odds to form a New India by 2022, which will mark the 75th year of the country�s Independence.� The oath was administered among the farmers from across the district and Soil Health Cards were ceremoniously distributed to farmers in the meeting.
AK Saikia, registrar of AAU along with MLAs of Udharbond, Sonai and Borkhola constituencies and DDC Cachar Madhumita Choudhury attended the meeting. Chief Scientist of KVK Cachar P Choudhury delivered the vote of thanks.
