AGP to amend party constitution

GUWAHATI, May 14 - NDA constituent Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today decided to undertake amendment in its party constitution with a view to strengthening its organisational set-up.

This decision was taken at the executive committee meeting of the regional party held here today.

The meeting was attended by AGP president Atul Bora, party working president Keshab Mahanta, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former party president Brindaban Goswami, former Union minister Birendra Prasad Baishya, State minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury and other senior leaders including Dr Kamalakanta Kalita, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Utpal Dutta, Prodip Hazarika, Nurul Hussain, Bhupen Rai and Manoj Saikia.

The meeting discussed a number of issues including the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the upcoming polls to two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam, the party�s organisational aspects, the ongoing NRC update process, among other issues.

It was decided to form a committee to work on amending the party�s constitution with a view to strengthening its organisation.

Another committee was also formed, comprising all the senior party leaders and MLAs, to look into the issue of the forthcoming Rajya Sabha polls. AGP is seeking to put up its candidate for one of the two vacant Rajya Sabha seats in Assam.

The executive committee of AGP also expressed concern over what it termed as efforts by certain elements to sabotage the ongoing NRC update process and decided to send a delegation to meet State NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela in this regard.

It also condemned the defacement carried out by miscreants at the AASU office at Basugaon.

The meeting took stock on the feedback received from various constituencies with regard to the Lok Sabha polls and decided to constitute a disciplinary committee to look into complaints received from the district committees.

A decision was also taken to send a high-level delegation to New Delhi to meet Union government officials to discuss the matter of revival of the paper mills, besides that of constitutional safeguards for the indigenous communities of the State and granting of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities.

Meanwhile, sources said Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who has in recent days taken a stand against the current AGP leadership on issues like the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, also spoke during the meeting and made his stand clear on various issues.
