AGP steps up opposition to citizenship Bill

NEW DELHI, March 13 - A delegation of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) reiterating their opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 has requested the Joint Parliamentary Committee to visit Assam.

A delegation of AGP leaders comprising Biren Baishya, Kumar Deepak Das, Dr Kamala Kalita, Ramen Kalita and Phani Bhusan Choudhury among others are in the capital meeting Central ministers and opposition parties lobbying against the Bill.

On Tuesday, the delegation called on chairman of the Joint Parliamentary committee Rajendra Agrawal and expressed their opposition to the Bill. The delegation also requested Agrawal to tour Assam to get a feeling of the ground situation, said Kumar Deepak Das.

�We have also handed over a memorandum signed by AGP president Atul Bora and State Minister Keshab Mahanta,� informed Baishya.

The delegation also called on Bathrahari Mehtab of BJD and Sanjay Raut of the Shiv Sena seeking their support in opposing the Bill.

On December 22, last, the AGP had served an ultimatum on the NDA Government asserting that passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 would result in the regional party quitting the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Government.
