AGP statewide stir against Gogoi govt

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 13 Members of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today staged demonstrations in front of the offices of the subdivisional officers and block development officers and sent memorandums to the President of India, Prime Minister and Governor demanding dismissal of the Tarun Gogoi Government.

AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary said that the AGP would continue its agitation demanding dismissal of the State Government headed by Tarun Gogoi for its involvement in various financial scams.

Patowary said that the special audit of the accounts of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council by the office of the Accountant General proved the involvement of the government in the scam, the Chief Minister has no moral right to stay in power. He pointed out that following the CAG report in the 2G spectrum issue, Union Minister A Raja was forced to resign and Gogoi should follow suit after the involvement of the Government in the NC Hills financial scam was proved. He further pointed out as the Minister in charge of the Finance department, the Chief Minister cannot escape the blame for the scam.

Patowary further demanded that the special audit of the accounts of the Bodoland Territorial Council should be made public and a similar audit into the accounts of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council should be ordered immediately.

The AGP president further said that apart from the financial scam in NC Hills, the Congress-led Government was involved in major financial scams in all major departments, while the Government compromised with the future of the State by supporting mega dams.

Patowary said that in the next phase, the AGP would stage demonstrations in all the district headquarters of the State in a phased manner starting from December 20 demanding dismissal of the Government.

Meanwhile, the AASU will observe 30-hour hunger strike from 7 am of December 14 demanding resignation of the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, the AGP today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi blaming him for the multi-crore NC Hills scam. The party also insisted on special audits for all the autonomous bodies in governance so that financial anomalies hitherto under lid are exposed and the culpable recognized by the public.

Addressing mediapersons here, former Chief Minister and leader of the Opposition in the Assembly PK Mahanta said that the party had decided to intensify its movement against corruption and asked the Chief Minister to step down from office owning moral responsibility for the NC Hills scam as he is holding the Home and Finance portfolios.

On the other hand, Mahanta criticized the government stand on the issue of NRC update and remarked that it was playing the minority card which will pave the way for illegal Bangladeshis to enter their names in the voters list. The AGP is opposed to the revised NRC form as that will not give a correct voters list, said Mahanta, observing that there were forces bent on diluting the update process.

It needs to be mentioned here that the government has come up with a revised NRC form that does not have the clause requiring mentioning of the birth place.
