AGP stages demo against land swap deal

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 13 Members of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today staged sit in demonstration all over the State to oppose the land swap deal with Bangladesh.

The AGP, in a release, said that the party would never accept handing over of Assams land to Bangladesh. The regional party asserted that the future of Assam is not safe under parties like the Congress and the BJP.

Before the last Lok Sabha polls, the BJP had opposed the land swap deal and the party did a complete U turn after coming to power. Moreover, during the election rallies, Narendra Modi had asserted that the Bangladeshi nationals would have to leave India after May 16, but after becoming the Prime Minister, instead of taking effective steps to detect and deport foreigners, he handed over Assams land to Bangladesh, the AGP alleged.

The AGP is also planning to bring out torch light processions on May 16 followed by a protest rally in Guwahati on May 20.

Tinsukia Correspondent adds: Demanding withdrawal of land swap deal from the Parliament, Tinsukia district committee of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has resorted to two hours sit in dharna in its office complex at SD Agarwala Road here today.

Terming both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as traitors of Assam for playing dubious roles in land swap deal, the district secretary of the party, Netra Baruah stated that both the parties have betrayed the people of Assam and jointly worked for giving land to Bangladesh. But people of Assam have identified them as betrayers and would fight against the land swap deal.
