AGP seeks probe by House panel

By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 18 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has demanded that a House Committee should be formed to investigate into the expenditures of the Congress-led Government in the State as there is a vast gap between expenditures and physical achievements of the schemes.

The AGP has come out with a review of the white paper presented to the Assembly by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and alleged that only expenditures do not reflect the physical development.

The AGPs review paper said that there is a vast gap between the expenditures incurred by the Government and physical achievement of various projects and there are reasons to doubt misuse of substantial amounts of public money.

The AGP said that the main demands of the party were not reflected in the white paper. The AGP had demanded that the State Government should make clear whether any major scheme was implemented by it apart from the Centrally-sponsored schemes. The party sought clarification from the government on the centrally-sponsored schemes and their physical achievement. The Government should also make public the amounts taken as loan from various institutions like the Asian Development Bank and World Bank and where the money was spent.

The AGP said that on paper, the Government could spend the funds sanctioned by the Government of India but in reality, no major development could be seen on the ground. The Government claimed that it spent more than Rs 22000 crore in the last five years for development schemes, but can anyone see such development in the State, the AGP questioned. The Gogoi Government surpassed all records on spending but not on physical achievement of the development projects, the AGP said. The growth of per capita income in Assam since 2001 was much lower than the national average and it is even lower than the neighbouring States like Meghalaya and Manipur.
