NEW DELHI, Aug 23 � Confused by his remarks over the need to revisit the Assam Accord, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Thursday sought a clarification from the President, underlining the need to implement the Assam Accord in letter and spirit.
Talking to mediapersons, AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that President, Pranab Mukherjee�s statement has created confusion. �When he said there is a need to re-visit the Assam Accord, what did he mean. Was he talking about the need to detect foreigners under Foreigners Act, because of repeal of the IM (DT) Act,� Mahanta told newsmen on the sidelines of the demonstration organised by his Party at Jantar Mantar here today.
President of India�s remark that �revisiting the Assam Accord to present-day conditions� smacks of hidden intention of the Government. The people of Assam wanted implementations of the Assam Accord in letter and spirit, said Mahanta.
Any attempt to revisit the Assam Accord with intention to undermine will have serious repercussion not only in Assam or North-eastern region but in the entire country. The Assam Accord continues to be an undelivered promise by Centre, Mahanta said.
A delegation of AGP leaders including three MPs including Biren Baishya, Kumar Deepak Das, Joseph Toppo, besides former party chief Chandra Mohan Patowary, Atul Bora, Dr Kamala Kalita, Keshab Mahanta, Biraj Sarma, among others, called on the President before their afternoon meeting with the Prime Minister.
The AGP is pressing for solution of their six-point charter of demands including implementation of Assam, Accord, updating of NRC, safety and security of people, seizure of illegal weapons, among others.
On Thursday, the delegation also called on the Chief Election Commissioner, V.S. Sampath, regarding alleged misuse of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Yesterday, the delegation had called on Union Home Minister and Minister of State for Environment and Forest.
In an indication that the regional party may be reviving the foreigners issue all over again, Mahanta blamed the Congress-ruled Centre and State Government for ignoring resolution of the State�s problems for long, leading to further complication of the problems. He urged his party-men to be ready for further intensification of the agitation against the Congress Government.
�We are constrained to use the term �Burning Assam�, not because as an Opposition party but because with every passing day, the situation in Assam has been going from bad to worse; so much so that the very fabric of the society may be strained,� the regional party alleged.
