NEW DELHI, Aug 22 Former Chief Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today demanded Central intervention in the face of the State governments failure to protect the life and property of the people living at Charaipung along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
Mahanta, who is in the capital, while talking to this newspaper, described the Dr Bhumidhar Barman Government, as a lame-duck government, which has totally failed to protect the people of the area.
The State Government is yet to take any stand on the issue and people of the State are currently feeling very insecure. If the State Government cant provide security to its own people then it should seek Central help, he said, calling for urgent Central intervention to prevent escalation of tension in the area.
He further alleged that NSCN (I-M) has been firing indiscriminately, even as the State Government is hesitating to take action. Dr Barmans powers have been curbed and for every decision he has to look towards Mumbai, Mahanta alleged.
He was referring to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who is recuperating in Mumbai.
Dr Barman is not empowered to take any major decision without Gogois consent, he alleged.
Under the circumstances, Government of India should intervene and take control of the situation, he said.
Yesterday, a delegation of AGP visited the Charaipung area to take stock of the situation.
The regional party has criticised the State and Central governments for their failure to protect the life and property of the citizens of Assam.
Our Staff Reporter in Guwahati adds: The AGP has sought the intervention of the Government of India for settling the States border disputes with the neighbouring states.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, AGP spokesman Atul Bora said that if the Government of India does not intervene immediately, the regional party would be forced to launch a movement for protecting the land of the State.
Bora alleged that the Assam Government totally failed to protect the geographical boundaries of the State and despite frequent attacks in the Charaipung area in recent times, the Government remained silent. He said that a delegation of the AGP visited the area to take stock of the ground situation and found that the people were living under fear psychosis due to the total failure of the State Government to protect their life and properties. Only the Law Minister visited the area and he also did not go to the affected villages, Bora alleged.
The AGP spokesman said that the State Government must take immediate steps to protect the geographical boundaries of Assam and permanent land settlement should be given to the people living in the border areas.
