AGP pledges to oust Cong

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 29 Top leadership of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today took a pledge to oust the Congress party from Dispur in the ensuing 2011 Assembly election by taking Congress misrule to the doorsteps of the common voters.

The leadership of the regional party also flayed the ruling Government on burning issues including those relating to price rise, construction of mega dams and corruption.

At the Sankalpa Divas rally organised at the Veterinary playground, Guwahati, party president Chandra Mohan Patowary termed the rally as an epoch-making event urging the leaders to sacrifice their personal differences in the greater interest of the party and the people of Assam.

The surprise presence in todays rally was of former AGP president Brindaban Goswami, who appeared on a common party platform after a hiatus of almost three years.

After 1985 when the AGP was floated, this is perhaps the first time that we are experiencing such an unfazed and united stand. There is no division in the party and the AGP today stands united and are confident of ending the Congresss misrule in the ensuing polls, Patowary said, addressing the rally attended by scores of party workers.

Two-time former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta who is now the leader of the Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly, flaying the Congress Government, stated, The last ten years of Congress rule at Dispur could be termed as a black episode in the history of State politics, which was marked by false promises and corrupt practices. The Congress party itself has emerged as a problem.

The AGP is a fear factor for the Congress Government and there is no alternative to the regional party if security and development is to be achieved, the founder president of AGP stated.

Speaking on the occasion, former AGP president Brindaban Goswami assured that the party, if brought to power, would strive to gain self-sufficiency in all the fronts instead of totally depending on Central funds.

States like Maharashtra and Gujarat are the prime example of a healthy economy and we would work to secure a better life for the common men, Goswami pointed out.

The AGP today also felicitated family members of the martyrs of the Assam movement on the occasion. A handbook on AGP was also released today.

Almost all the senior leaders of the regional party attended the rally today.
