AGP on comeback trail in 3 Sivasagar LACs

By Correspondent

SIVASAGAR, April 2 In three of the six LACs of Sivasagar district - 107 Thowra, 108 Sivasagar and 105 Mahmora, AGP is on a comeback trail as it appears on the last day of first phase of campaign ending today for the elections on April 4.

This is in addition to super-sensitive 103 Amguri constituency now represented by AGP strongman Pradip Hazarika, who is however facing a stiff challenge from equally strong Congman Anjan Dutta.

Pronobjit Chaliha (Romu) in Sivasagar is riding high on an AGP wave after a long time, but no one is certain yet where he will land up on April 13 next as Law, Sericulture, Handloom and Textile Minister Pronob Gogoi is confident with solid network of Congress workers and the support he has received from Bijoy Krishna Handique , Member of Parliament of Jorhat Parliamentary seat, of which Sivasagar is a segment.

One concern for Pronobjit is the upbeat BJP ranks in upper Assam and the hard work BJP candidate from the constituency Jayanta Rajkonwar has been doing over the months. Another thorn in Pronobjits flesh is the lack of co-operation from a section of AGP workers who blame Pronobjit himself for not taking the grassroot workers of the party into confidence.

Veteran CPI leader Promode Gogoi will definitely get votes from his partymen, but that will be far short of the winning mark.

In Thowra, AGP candidate Lilajyoti Phukan has toppled calculations of a high voltage contest between sitting independent MLA Kushal Duwori, the SULFA man and Youth Congress leader Sushanta Borgohain, both allegedly crorepatis in the fray, besides BJPs Siba Bhadra. Lilajyoti has a distinct edge as on today as the sizeable Mising community in Panidihing will vote for AGP in addition to the hard working AGP grass root level workers in the constituency.

In Mahmora LAC, AGPs Hironya Konwar is an experienced campaigner and has been doing well with a re juvenated AGP brigade which is taking advantage of the sitting MLA Sarat Saikias sagging popularity and allegations of corruption.

Jogen Mohon of the BJP in the constituency is also making a big impact over the electorate as the third alternative who is drawing big help from Sarbananda Sonowal and the BJP central leaders that addressed the voters on a number of occasions.

The overall situation in Sivasagar district is peaceful barring minor scuffles between supporters of AGP and Congress at Amguri , between Kushal Duworis Bikash Monch and Congress at Thowra and Congress and AGP at Desangmukh.

The Sivasagar district administration brought out a procession today with school children for generating awareness among the voters, where not many children took part because of the ULFA-sponsored bandh.
