AGP for adequate compensation

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 30 AGP MLA PK Mahanta today called upon the State government to ensure proper and timely compensation to people whose land is acquired for Central projects, including building of national highways.

Citing a report in The Assam Tribune (March 3 issue) about people affected by NH-52(B) project seeking fair compensation, Mahanta drew attention of the Legislative Assembly that many families who lost their land in Dibrugarh due to the project had said that they had been deprived of fair compensation.

He said that similarly, many families in Dhemaji district whose land was acquired for the Bogibeel project had also been deprived of compensation.

Arrangement should be made for proper compensation in case of land acquisition for national projects, Mahanta said.

In his reply, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management Dr Bhumidhar Barman said that compensation for affected families under the relevant State Act is higher than under the Central Act.

He said the government was committed to addressing all grievances of the project-affected people and was also trying to reach a settlement with the affected people in Dibrugarh district.
