NEW DELHI, Aug 27 Taking a pro-Anna stand, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today favoured adoption of the three issues raised by Anna Hazare in the proposed Lokpal Bill.
Participating in the discussion on the statement by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Lokpal in Rajya Sabha, Biren Baishya said that the regional party wanted the Prime Minister under the purview of the Lokpal Bill. AGP is in favour of a strong Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayukta at the State, Baishya said.
There should be accountability of the judiciary and we are in favour of a strong judicial commission, the AGP MP added.
On citizens charter, he said that they supported it because most the people suffer from a section of officials. They always resort to delaying tactics and hence responsibility should be fixed on officers and bureaucrats, he asserted.
Supporting inclusion of lower bureaucracy, Baishya said that due to corruption at the lower level, poor people face harassment. It is very unfortunate that in our country, to get a death certificate, people sometimes have to pay bribe, he said.
Noting that the country is passing through a historic moment, Baishya praised Anna Hazare for his non-violent movement against corruption, which has united the country from one end to the other.
Describing the discussion as a historic occasion, the AGP MP said that it is because of the gravity of the issue that the Parliament was sitting today. AGP has supported a strong Lokpal since beginning. The Common Minimum Programme of the United Front Government, which had drafted in 1996, the Lokpal was a major agenda and it supported inclusion of the Prime Minister under Lokpal, he recalled.
