By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 20 Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) members staged a dharna in front of Raj Bhawan here today in protest against the failure of the State Government to take action against the tainted ministers who have been allegedly found involved by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the Rs 1,000 crore NC Hills Autonomous Council scam.

They also submitted memorandums to the Governor of the State and the President of the country on the issue.

A delegation led by AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary and comprising former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former Minister Atul Bora, former MLA Dilip Kumar Saikia and MLAs Hiren Das, Girin Barua, among others met the Governor at Raj Bhawan to hand over the memorandums.

Chief spokesman of the party Atul Bora said that in the memorandums, the party urged the Governor and the President of the country to recommend to the Central Government immediate dismissal of the Tarun Gogoi Government in the State for its corruption and collusion with the terrorist groups.

It also pleaded for removal of the tainted ministers and their imprisonment for facilitating an impartial enquiry into the NC Hills scam. They should also be tried for their conspiracy against the people of the State, said the party. Besides, it said that punitive actions should be taken against all those involved in the NC Hills scam.

The regional party also pleaded for steps to debar the tainted ministers and other persons from contesting the elections.

Steps to ensure non-recurrence of such scams involving development funds and siphoning off, of such funds to benefit the terrorist outfits by a nexus of the politicians and bureaucrats, have also been pleaded for by the party.

It further asked for complete transparency in utilisation of the Central funds in the State, including its autonomous councils.

ASDC for CBI probe: The Autonomous State Demand Committee, NC Hills district today called for a probe by the National Investigation Agency into the alleged embezzlement of NC Hills Autonomous Council fund from 2001to 2007 instead of 2004 to 2009, arguing that the Rs 1,000-crore scam took place during the rule of the Congress in the Council.

The ASDC also urged the Government to initiate a CBI inquiry into the matter from 2001 to 2009 and book the culprits irrespective of any party affiliation, said a statement.
