AGP demands special session of Assembly

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 10 - Demanding a special session of the State Legislative Assembly over the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today asked its legislature party to take up the matter with Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami.

Stressing that the regional party would take every step to ensure that the Bill is not passed in the Parliament, it also asked the three AGP ministers in the State cabinet to raise the issue in the next cabinet meeting.

We wont compromise on this issue at any cost and our ministers would make it clear in the next cabinet meeting. AGP has been opposing this Bill since its inception and would continue to do so in future as well, AGP leader Dr Kamala Kalita said in a press conference here.

We came for an alliance with the BJP to form the government in State to honour the mandate of the people of Assam. However, the regional characteristic of the AGP is still intact. We have already started mobilizing public opinion against the Bill. We have also asked our legislature party to meet the Assembly Speaker and ask him to convene a special session of the Assembly as soon as possible, he added.

Party leader Biren Baishya said that Assam cannot be allowed to become a dumping ground for illegal migrants. The AGP has already

made its stand clear before the President, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister. The Union government cannot take arbitrary decision on this issue as per its sweet will, he added.

The AGP during its deposition before the JPC in Guwahati in strong terms had expressed its opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
