AGP demands fiscal emergency in State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 22 The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today demanded declaration of financial emergency in the State under Article 360 of the Constitution of the country.

Addressing media persons here, leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly PK Mahanta said that under the prevailing situation of widespread corruption and misappropriation of funds, it was of paramount importance to declare financial emergency in the State.

Mahanta, on the other hand, reacting to Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's remarks at a press conference today regarding the AGP, said that age had caught up with the Chief Minister which was the reason for his baseless allegations against the AGP.

It is a habit with the Chief Minister to divert the attention of the people from the burning issues, said Mahanta, alleging that Gogoi has resorted to cheap politics as a warm-up to the coming Assembly elections.

Mahanta, citing instances of some activities of the ruling Congress like distribution of blankets, mosquito nets, looms, plying of buses introduced under the JNNURM in the capital city and which were left unattended for more than a year on the outskirts of the city, etc., said that these were just a few examples of the cheap technique adopted by the Congress for furthering their political interests.

"Gogoi keeps repeating the failure of the AGP on all fronts, but what has his government actually achieved? Except for decentralizing corruption, the Congress can make no claim. It has betrayed the expectations of the people," said Mahanta, alleging that the Congress is sparing no occasion to malign the AGP.

Mahanta announced that if the AGP gets the mandate of the people, its first duty would be to eradicate corruption from the State.

"If AGP comes to power, inquiry will be ordered into every instance of corruption and action would be taken," assured Mahanta, mentioning that the State needs a political change to begin a new corruption-free era.
