GUWAHATI, Feb 26 While the opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here have described the Union Budget as anti-people, the State wing of the Congress has welcomed it as pro-development. The AGP has also described the budget as anti-NE region.
AGP chief spokesman Atul Bora said that the budget would lead to more inflation making life miserable for the common people. The Union budget last year led to inflation and subsequently hikes in the prices of the essential items. The UPA Government at the Centre has failed to draw a lesson form the experiences it confronted as a result of the last budget, Bora said.
The proposals of the budget presented by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today were basically formulated to promote the interest of the multi-national companies and the countrys big capital, and the proposal to impose more customs duties on petroleum products will surely hit the common people. The budget has no proposal for the unemployed people of the country, he said.
With its stress on ushering in a green revolution in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa with an investment of Rs 400 crore and ignoring the NE region it has made the attitude of the Central Government towards the people of the region evident.
The budget has included a Rs 500-crore proposal for cleaning the Ganga. But there is no mention of the problems of flood and erosion that have been affecting Assam for decades,. Moreover, there is no allocation made in the budget for identification of the citizens as was done by the Finance Minister in his budget last year, Bora said.
The State wing of the BJP has warned that the budget would make life miserable for the common people with the burden of more taxes. The budget has exposed the anti-people character of the UPA Government, said BJP State president Ranjit Dutta in a statement here.
The budget has failed to propose any mechanism to check the phenomena of inflation and price rise. Moreover, the allocations made for the NE projects are also inadequate, said the BJP State president.
However, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita claimed that the budget would benefit the common people of the country.
The budget has proposed more allocations for infrastructure development, for ensuring food security, Indira Awas Yojana and urban employment generation, besides the enhanced allocations for education and health sectors.
It has also proposed a four-point programme for the farming sector of the country and proposed relief to the employees and petty businessmen, Kalita said.
Meanwhile, the State committee of CPI (M), in a press release, as described the Union Budget as an anti-people one.
