AGP bid to unite regional parties

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 � After formally snapping electoral ties with the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has started efforts to form a platform of regional parties and party president Chandra Mohan Patowary asserted that the AGP is ready to face the ensuing Assembly polls.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Patowary said that the AGP is having talks with regional parties like Bodoland People�s Progressive Front (BPPF), Ganashakti Party and Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) as a part of its effort to create a platform of regional parties before the Assembly elections. He said that the AGP would also have talks with parties like the CPI and CPM in the days to come.

Patowary admitted that under the present political situation, it is difficult for any political party to form a Government alone, either in Delhi or Dispur. He also did not rule out the possibility of the AGP entering into post poll alliance.

Commenting on the preparedness of the AGP to face the elections, Patowary said that the first phase of the mass contact programme received overwhelming response from the people of Assam and the next phase to cover all the constituencies would start on October 28. He said that the process of assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the party has already started and so far, 75 constituencies have been covered. He revealed that the views of the grass root level workers of the regional party would be taken into consideration while the candidates for the polls and �this time, we are planning to declare the names of the candidates well ahead of the polls so that they can get ready to face the voters.�

The AGP president said that the AGP is preparing a document on the failures of the Congress in all fronts in last nine years in Government and the same would be distributed among all sections of the people within a month. He revealed that instead of trying to gain the confidence of the people only on the failures of the Congress, the AGP is also preparing a document of its policies and the same would be released soon.
