Agatha lays foundation of sugar mill in Golaghat

DERGAON, March 28 � �Among the Indian States, in Maharastra and Punjab the cooperative sector has been developed and so there are good markets for the agriculture products. In the NE States, the individual approach is common which is a big problem for the total development. At present the development of THE cooperative sector is a must for checking price rise in the country.� This was stated by the Union minister of State for Rural Development, Agatha Sangma, while delivering her speech at a public meeting after laying the foundation stone of the proposed Sarat Chandra Sinha Cooperative Sugar Mill at Khakandaguri, 10 km off Dergaon town, on Sunday.

The minister also revealed that she will render service to the development of entire NE region.The meeting chaired by Ananta Kumar Baruah, ADC, Golaghat was held at Khakandguri LP School. Explaining the objective of the meeting, the secretary of the preparation committee Prabin Kr Borah said that the preparation of construction of the mill was started following the resolution adopted at a meeting held on June 28, 2008.

Explaining the project of the mill, Mridul Saikia, the president of the Sugar Mill Preparation Committee, revealed that the cost of the mill will be Rs.60 crore and the daily production capacity will be 2500 metric tonnes. The mill will be set up in 64 bighas of land donated by 16 poor farmers from their own myadi patta land. He also said that a total of 315 employees in all capacities will be in the mill. In the meeting NCP State president Dhirendra Dev Adhikari, general secretary Bedanga Bordoloi also took part. Adhikari said that the name of the mill is proper as late Sarat Ch Sinha was the doyen of the cooperative movement in the State. Earlier, Agatha was offered warm felicitation by several organisations and individuals.

According to sources, a total of 18,972 hectares of land suitable for sugarcane production in Golaghat district and among them 60 per cent land has been utilised in sugarcane production. It is pertinent to mention that Baruabamungaon Cooperative Sugar Mill exits in memory only.
