AGARTALA, Oct 9 � Elections for the Agartala Municipal Council and 15 Nagar Panchayats will be held in December where 50 per cent of the seats would be reserved for the women, official sources said today.
�Tripura is the first state in the north-eastern region of the country where 50 per cent seats will be reserved for women in the urban local bodies,� Secretary of the State Election Commission Gobinda Chandra Bhattacharjee said.
The state government amended the Tripura Municipal Act in March this year where the reservation of seats for women was enhanced from 33 per cent to 50 per cent, he told reporters.
The draft lists of polling stations for the urban local bodies were published on October 6 last. The total number of polling stations as per draft lists is 546.
