SHILLONG, Feb 8 - After months of power struggle, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has been placed under the Administrators Rule.
Governor Tathagata Roy has appointed Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district Matsiewdor War Nongbri as the Administrator of the council for the time being.
The Governor took the decision on the basis of recommendation of the NPP-led State Government. The NPP-led Government had recommended the Governors Rule last year too, but it was rejected by the Governor.
The council was earlier run by a coalition comprising the NPP, United Democratic Party and other regional parties, and Independents. However, some of the members switched sides and joined hands with the Congress, leading to the collapse of the council last year.
Independent member Latiplang Kharkongor was propelled as the new Chief Executive Member of the Council by the Congress and its supporters.
But the State Government refused to give its nod to the list of names forwarded by Kharkongor for his Executive Council. The issue then went to the High Court.
A few days back, the High Court directed the State Government to approve of the list of Executive Members proposed by Kharkongor.
But after the High Courts order, the Government once again recommended the Administrators Rule, which was accepted by the Governor this time. The only option left with Kharkongor now is to challenge imposition of the Administrators Rule in court.
