Adivasis observe Rights Day at Bongaigaon

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Nov 26 - The Bongaigaon district unit of All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) observed Rights Day at Birjhora Tea Estate here recently.

In protest against an incident in which student activists and their supporters were brutally assaulted by some local people at Beltola in Guwahati this day in 2007, the students group has been observing Rights Day on this particular day since the past eight years.

The then Congress Government had failed to deliver justice to the victims of the incident. In fact, the Government did not initiate any punitive action against the attackers and the molesters of the teenaged girl, the leaders rued.

We went to Guwahati to seek our basic rights guaranteed by the Constitution, and not for a separate land or State. Unable to face our protest, the Congress Government deployed some local goons to assault us brutally in order to foil our mission, alleged Hiru Bagdi, adviser to the district unit of AASAA.

In the villages, the Adivasi people often become the victims of militants, while during democratic agitation, they become the victims of the Government machinery, So, who will address the issues of the community, the Government must answer, Amrit Jojo, president of AASAAs district unit said.

Earlier, Amrit Jojo unfurled the flag of the association while Hiru Bagdi spoke about the sacrifice of the martyrs and urged all to remember them on this auspicious occasion.
