Adivasi students� body demands ST status

DIPHU, Oct 13 - Thousands of activists of the Bakalia regional committee of the All Adivasi Students� Association of Assam formed a human chain near the Birsa Munda�s statue at Hathidandi Bazar Tiniali near Bakulia today.

The students� body demanded granting of the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Adivasi community in the State, issuance of land registration (patta) to the Adivasi families, augmentation of daily wages of tea garden workers to Rs 351 and the formation of Adivasi Autonomous Satellite Council.

Hariprasad Konwar, general secretary of the Karbi Anglong District Committee of the All Adivasi Students� Association of Assam, and Pawan Satnami, secretary of the Bakalia regional committee of the organisation, led the demonstration.

The students� body has cautioned the ruling BJP government that the Adivasi community may proscribe the saffron party in the coming Assam Assembly elections if their demands are not met.
