Adequate forces deployed along Assam-Nagaland border

GUWAHATI, Aug 8 - The State Government has deployed adequate number of forces along the Assam-Nagaland boundary to maintain peace as well as to prevent encroachment on Assam�s land.

In a written reply to the Legislative Assembly on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the Border Areas Development portfolio, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs CM Patowary said that in February 2015 and again on April 4 this year, incidents of firing took place between patrolling teams of Assam Police and encroachers from Nagaland at Daldali Reserve Forest area. However, nobody was hurt in the incidents.

To ensure that such incidents are not repeated, Assam Police and Forest personnel are jointly conducting patrolling.

He said the following discussion with officials from Nagaland administration and police, the neighbhouring State has also deployed forces along the inter-State border and peace is currently being maintained in the area.

Patowary said that encroachments from Nagaland in Daldali and Dhansiri reserve forests have been evicted and patrolling is being carried out to ensure that such encroachments are not repeated in future.

A Original Suit No 2/1988 has been filed in the Supreme Court by the Assam Government against the Nagaland Government seeking the apex court�s direction to prevent land encroachment.

Patowary said that as soon as any incidents of encroachment from Nagaland takes place, intervention from the highest quarters of the Assam Government, including at the levels of Chief Minister and Chief Secretary, are made. The Union Home Ministry is also intimated.

In a written reply to another question, Patowary said that 9,873 persons had been affected during the incidents which took place at the �B� Sector of Assam-Nagaland border in 2014.

Altogether, 755 affected families have already been rehabilitated and neutral forces from CRPF and SSB have been deployed in the zone to ensure security. A peace committee has also been formed to maintain peace and tranquility in the inter-State border in the area.
