TURA, May 9 � An Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Ringrang TG Momin was injured in an exchange of fire between police and militants belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) this morning. The ASP, was hit in his upper thigh during the ambush.
He is said to recovering from his injuries after being rushed to Goalpara in Assam for treatment.
The encounter site was in an area under the Mendipathar police station under North Garo Hills.
�Acting on a tip-off, a police team launched a search operation for GNLA cadres led by Philiport (Rakban D Shira). While the search party was returning from the operation they were fired upon by militants. In the ensuing attack, the ASP was shot on his thigh. Other policemen received slight injuries�, said NGH SP Ramesh Singh.
He informed that the policemen were in vehicles when they were ambushed.
The operation was led by the SWAT and CRPF teams. The police teams have intensified their search after the ambush and according to sources the operations are still on. The militants escaped into the nearby jungles after the incident.
Momin was later taken by helicopter to Guwahati for further treatment. He is said to be out of danger after a bullet was removed from his thigh.
An MPS from the 2004 batch, Momin had taken part in numerous operations in Garo Hills. He has been a target of militants. In December 2014, a group of militants from GNLA shot at his quarter while his wife and child were inside. The ASP is recipient of two gallantry awards.
