Addl forces deployed for peaceful Puja

GUWAHATI, Sept 26 - Several companies of additional forces have been deployed across the State in view of Durga Puja celebrations as per sensitivity of the districts concerned, although there is no specific threat percept.

Further, police superintendents of all the districts have been directed to keep a constant tab on the known antisocial elements who might try to break the public order.

Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Kula Saikia told The Assam Tribune that security arrangement is being reviewed on a constant basis to thwart any kind of untoward incident during Durga Puja and on the day of immersion and also in view of Muharram.

�Special stress has also been laid on ensuring smooth flow of vehicular traffic and already diversion routes have been notified,� he pointed out.

�Guidelines have been issued to all the puja committees which they will have to comply with. These include safety provisions, roping in of volunteers and making arrangements for close circuit television cameras in strategic locations,� Saikia said.

The Special DGP (L&O) had already chaired review meetings in different district headquarters, including Guwahati, Nagaon, Jorhat and Sivasagar, where he vouched for effective maintenance of law and order situation.

Saikia further informed that all the districts have been asked to carry out drive against drink-driving, rash driving and stunt-biking.

�We have asked the authorities concerned to ensure that pandal-hoppers do not fall prey to chain-snatchers and pickpockets and if necessary, preventive measures should be taken,� Saikia said, adding, for the convenience of pedestrians, the authorities have been directed to clear all the footpaths from unauthorized occupants.

�To avert any incident of food poisoning, the committees have been asked to take extra caution while preparing the prasad,� he added.
