GUWAHATI, June 20 � The prestigious Labanya Hazarika Adarsha Matri Award, instituted by the Asam Lekhika Sangstha last year under the auspices of Labanya Hazarika Memorial Trust, will be given posthumously to late Santipriya Hazarika, a social worker and mother of Asam Ratna, Dadasaheb Phalke awardee music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika on June 29 next in the Tirthanath Sarma auditorium here at 11 am.
The award will be given away by Jnanpeeth awardee Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami and the function to this effect will be chaired by another well-known writer Nirupama Borgohain. The award consists of a citation, a plaque and Rs 10,000 in cash.
With an aim to honour those mothers who have made immense contributions towards the upbringing of their children who ultimately contributed in building the greater Assamese society and also in strengthening the social fabric, the award was instituted in memory of late Labanya Hazarika of Dibrugarh, a successful woman in public life and a successful mother in bringing up children that include Padmashri Surjya Hazarika and Bani Mandir proprietor Utpal Hazarika. The Labanya Hazarika Memorial Trust established for this purpose has created a corpus fund that will be run by the Asam Lekhika Sangstha, to be utilised in conferring the annual award.
Dr Hazarika, scheduled to accept the award on behalf of his mother on June 29, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the women writers� forum for selecting his mother late Santipriya Hazarika, who played a pivotal role in shaping the lives of ten children including late Jayanta Hazarika and late Amar Hazarika.
The first recipient of the award last year was Dr Nirupama Mahanta, a renowned Satriya music and drama exponent and children�s story writer.
