UDALGURI, April 16 - �Banana trees in large numbers can reduce the increasing man-elephant conflict along the Indo-Bhutan border. Therefore, I have undertaken this unique effort to plant more banana tress along the elephant corridor falling under the Dhansiri forest division in Udalguri district,� said Nabajyoti Baruah, a nature activist of Udalguri district.
Talking to this correspondent, Baruah said that people along the border should plant bananas trees in large number to get rid of the wild tuskers� menace. There are instances from other parts of the globe that banana trees in large numbers can check the wild tuskers to enter the human habitats. He also informed that he has undertaken the task to plant about 10,000 banana trees along the border for which he has sought public support. He also thanked the Divisional Forest Officer of Dhansiri Forest Division for his encouragement and for providing all possible help from the Forest department in this noble venture.
It is to be noted here that Nabajyoti Baruah of Kalaigaon in Udalguri district was recently honoured with the prestigious C Subramaniam Community Leader Fellowship Award for 2016-17 in New Delhi for his outstanding service for the betterment of wildlife along the Indo-Bhutan border areas.
Meanwhile, the Udalguri district committee of Aranya Suraksha Samiti, Asom congratulated Baruah for his achievement and appealed to the border villages to adopt Baurah�s method to get rid of man-elephant conflict by planting more banana trees in their respective areas.
