Action against offenders for unverified posts on social media

SILCHAR, April 7 - The Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Assam, GP Singh on Monday clearly said that if social media users do not verify the contents on any issue related to the COVID-19 pandemic or on any other matter which they forward or share on the social media platforms, police shall take action against the offenders under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

During his visit to the Cachar SP�s office to review the activities of the police department in southern Assam during the COVID-19 lockdown phase, Singh said, �people using social media must verify the origin or source of the messages before sharing and forwarding. People must think before posting anything during such a crucial phase the nation is going through and refrain from any kind of transmission of misinformation. If instances of unverified posts made on social media platforms escalate, police shall take action against the offenders under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.�

Further, the ADGP said that morale of the police officials in Barak Valley is high in dealing with the situation during the lockdown to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. He informed that necessary safety merchandise and logistics shall be provided to the department here from the police headquarters soon.

DIG (Southern Range) Dilip Kumar Dey and top brass of the police force of the three districts of Barak Valley attended the meeting with the ADGP (Law and Order) while the SP of Dima Hasao was briefed about the proceedings of the meeting.
