Action against faulty vehicle number plates

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 23 The District Transport Office, Kamrup has started to take action against car owners who are using registration number plates in a design format not approved by the authority. In random checks, personnel of the office have penalized people who had used decorative number plates, some of which could not even be properly read from a short distance.

In a statement released to the media, the DTO Kamrup has urged car owners to abide by the approved designs in registration number plates.

The move by the DTO has come after recent reports of cars with decorative or customized number plates fleeing after being involved in accidents or crime scenes. Because of their number plate designs it was difficult for eyewitnesses to record the registration numbers.

Registration marks of all two-wheelers and three-wheelers should have letters which should measure at least 30mm in height and 7mm in width with a space of 5mm between characters. All other motor vehicles should have number plates with letters measuring 65mm in height and 10mm in width. Three-wheelers must have number plates which are at least 35mm in height with a width of 7mm. More details on approved registration number plates can be acquired from the DTO Kamrups Office.
