SILCHAR, Nov 5 - Expressing concern over the recent road mishap which claimed two lives and injured over 20 persons in Silchar, the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students� Association (ACKHSA) has raised questions on the approach of the district administration and the police and has demanded financial support to the affected families.
In a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal sent through the Cachar Deputy Commissioner, the students� body demanded Rs 10 lakh each to be disbursed among the next of kin of those killed in the mishap as ex gratia along with government jobs to deserving members of the bereaved families.
Further, the association demanded an aid of Rs 2 lakh to the two critically injured patients and Rs 1 lakh each to those undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
�We are shocked to learn about the nightmarish accident which killed two girls and injured several persons. We understand that there is a clear lapse in duty by the police and district administration and hence demand intervention of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in this matter and call upon him to initiate action to investigate the alleged scam of illegal poppy seed transportation and prevent plying of trucks into the town area during no-entry hours.�
�We have also placed a strong demand for financial assistance to the families of the deceased and also to the families of those injured in the fatal accident,� said Rupam Nandi Purakayastha, chief adviser of the association.
The association further pressed for a complete overhaul of the district traffic management system with an appeal to make the branch more efficient so as to prevent repeat of such instances in the days ahead.
Meanwhile, Cachar Superintendent of Police Mugdhajyoti Deb Mahanta said that the district now has a new official for regulating traffic operations in Sandip Goswami by replacing the present incharge Shantanu Das. Terming the mishap as an unfortunate incident, the SP assured that the matter is being dealt with priority.
