Two child scientists of Assam won laurels in the National Children�s Science Congress (NCSC)) session held at Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The young girls, Santana Bora and Jayashree Barua have been selected for the national panel of child scientists for 2010.

Dr Mohanlal Brahma was appointed as the vice chancellor of the Bodoland University, Kokrajhar.

The mechanism of cataract formation discovered by three scientists of Assam has been recognised by the London-based Royal College of Ophthalmologists in their prestigious research journal, Eye. The research was conducted by a group comprising eye specialist Mir Alam Siddique of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Basant Kumar Tiwary, scientist of the Life Sciences department of the Assam University, Silchar and Satya Bhusan Paul, a biochemist of the Assam University, Silchar.

Harishankar Brahma, former bureaucrat, was appointed as Election Commissioner. A 1975 IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, Brahma (60), who hails from Assam, is a former Union Power Secretary.

Shiva Thapa, boxer, won a silver medal in the bantam weight (54kg) division after losing 2-5 in the finals to Cuba�s Ramirez Robeisy Aloy in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
