JORHAT, Oct 13 - The Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) on Saturday celebrated its 10th foundation day with a day-long programme.
Speaking at the general meeting organised on the occasion, the JMCH Principal and Chief Superintendent, Dr Atul Baro spoke about the highlights of the institute in the past one year.
Stating that students excelled in all the university examinations, Dr Baro said in the First MBBS Examination held in June 2019 by the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), out of the first 15 positions, JMCH students secured seven positions and also bagged the first position in the university.
He said that in the Second MBBS Examination held in January this year by the SSUHS, out of first 15 positions, JMCH students secured six positions. Similarly, in the Post Graduate examinations too, JMCH students passed out in flying colours, he added.
The Principal informed that as per the directive of the Central Government to increase the number of seats in all the medical colleges in the country after the introduction of a new policy to reserve seat for of students from economically weaker sections of the society, in JMCH too 25 seats have been added making the total this time to 125.
Speaking about academics, Dr Baro said that the Medical Council Of India granted permission to JMCH to start a Regional Centre for Medical Education which would cater to the needs of entire North Eastern states and part of West Bengal.
�From this year, we have started PG courses in Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT, Radiology and Anaesthesiology,� the Principal stated.
He added that presently 66 students were doing their post graduate courses in different subjects.
Dr Baro informed that since past four years the JMCH has been running PG courses in Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Forensic Medicine, Preventive and Social Medicine, Pharmacology and Microbiology departments.
Dr Baro rued about lack of infrastructure development in JMCH. �Infrastructure is not adequate and many of the buildings are crying for urgent repair. Seats were increased without adding to the infrastructure and as a result the PGs have to be accommodated at a different campus,� he observed.
The Principal said that in a medical institute the lack of proper infrastructure affects the service and academics. He, however, said that authorities were doing their best in providing the minimum facilities to the students.
Regarding hospital services, Dr Baro said that the patient load has been increasing day by day. He said though at the beginning the bed strength of JMCH was 500, but presently the institute had been providing service in 700 beds without any increase in manpower and other facilities.
He further requested everyone to stop using plastic, stop taking betel nut, stop consuming ghutka as doing the same will benefit all.
Regarding the hooch tragedy of February 2019 in Golaghat and Jorhat districts, the Principal said that it was an experience of a lifetime.
�Nobody wants to see another incident of this magnitude in their lifetime. We had to treat more than 500 patients in just two to three days. Our medicine and forensic departments had to face the situation, and they performed quite well under tremendous pressure. �They all deserve appreciation. Although our hospital mortality was very less, but mortality was quite high at ground zero�, Dr Baro said.
The Vice-Chancellor of Assam Women�s University Dr Malinee Goswami was the chief guest at the meeting.
