Acharya for assessment of NEC functioning

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 13 - Governor PB Acharya today said that the North Eastern Council (NEC), which was the nodal agency for the economic and social development of the eight States of the North-east, needed to be assessed in terms of its functioning since its establishment in 1971.

The Governor stressed that it was time to review how far we have reached in achieving our goals through the NEC over the last 35 years. We should consider whether it was time to add or supplement new road-maps or new voluntary organized institutions to strengthen our networks of development.

An official release quoting the Governor said that there were many experienced human resource groups like NSS, ex-servicemens associations, senior citizens organizations, Sahitya Sabhas, universities and university students organizations which can be the nodal agents to identify and reach the targeted beneficiaries.

I value the contributions of NEC in motivating and participating in the development of the north-eastern region which has plenty of natural resources and manpower. Whether NEC can address the issue of the development of the North-easts resources by itself should be explored, he added.
