ABSU demands IAS/IPS officers in BTAD region

UDALGURI, Dec 8 � The All Bodo Students� Union (ABSU) has in a memorandum addressed to Jitesh Khosla, Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, demanded appointment of only IAS and IPS officers as Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police (SP) in the three districts of the BTAD region, i.e., Udalguri, Baksa, and Chirang, for improvement of the law-and-order situation and also to build confidence among the various communities of the region.

The ABSU memorandum informed that the BTAD region, which has a population of 31 lakh comprising various communities, castes and religious faiths, had witnessed two major riots, in 2008 and 2012, resulting in the loss of life of scores of people and rendering lakhs of people homeless in Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Chirang and Baksa districts.

Referring to insurgency issue, unabated arms movements and also anti-social activities like extortions, kidnappings and killings, etc., in the region, the ABSU memorandum prayed for firm action by able administrators.

The memorandum also demanded setting up of a strong administrative machinery before the ensuing elections to the Lok Sabha, BTC and the State Assembly so as to maintain peace and build confidence among all the ethnic tribes ensuring justice, liberty and democratic rights of the people.

The student body also submitted copies of the memorandum to the Chief Minister and the Inspector General of Police.
