GUWAHATI, June 3 - Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) mayor Abir Patra today resigned from his post, paving the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party to take charge of the GMC general council.
It may be noted that after the State Assembly election results, the BJP had claimed majority in the corporation, asking the mayor to resign or face a no confidence motion.
After Patras resignation this afternoon, a GMC general council meeting would be convened to select a mayor unanimously, or through election, if necessary.
As per the GMC Act, the BJP councillors had asked for a requisition meeting today, as the mayor was not responding to our demand. However, the mayors resignation today itself sorted out the matter without the meeting, said BJPs Mrigen Sarania, a contender for the mayors post.
