HAFLONG, May 27 - In a major breakthrough, a joint team of 38 Assam Rifles and Assam Police rescued one Praful Kumar Tiwari, a resident of 12 Kilo under Umrangso Police Station in Dima Hasao district yesterday.
On 24 May last, Tiwari was kidnapped by a group of unidentified armed miscreants near 15 kilo, where he runs a small shop. The kidnappers demanded Rs 15,00,000/- as ransom from his family for the release of the victim.
At around 11.30 pm, a joint operation was launched by 38 Assam Rifles at Umrangso and Assam Police led by the SDPO of Maibang. After two successive search operations, the security personnel successfully rescued the victim from the clutches of the kidnappers.
Although the kidnappers were visible to the security forces, however, in order to ensure safety of the victim, the security forces did not shoot at them.
