By Staff Correspondent

SILCHAR, June 25 - Two officials of the Cachar Forest Department who had been allegedly abducted by an Executive Member of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council on Monday, were later released, primarily aided by footage from the surveillance cameras at the Bandarkhal Forest Beat Office.

According to sources, a group of five persons stormed the Bandarkhal Forest Beat Office in the wee hours on Monday and abducted the officials identified as Ramendra Jidung and Shubhendu Daulagupu at gun point.

Interestingly, the kidnapped persons were released after a few hours. Reacting over the issue, Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya said, to curb such crimes, the department was brought under the surveillance of technological support and the benefits were reaped today. We are seriously probing the matter at the higher level.

On the other hand, Cachar DFO Sunny Deo Choudhury said that an FIR had been lodged in this regard.

However, even as the abducted duo were released, questions on the motive behind the kidnapping is being hotly debated in political circles of Barak Valley. Speculations regarding involvement of a syndicate behind the illegal excavation of stones, in the incident, is doing the rounds.

Teak seized: Based on secret inputs, officials of Cachar Forest Division conducted a raid in Saraspur area under Dholai constituency of Cachar district on Monday night and recovered 1,400 logs of teak wood from one Nazrul Islam Laskar.
