AAU students render services in Mangaldai villages

MANGALDAI, Sept 4 - A group of students of 7th semester, BSc (Agri) of Assam Agricultural University under the Rural Agricultural Work Experience Prorgramme (RAWEP) have been rendering their service in four villages, including Dahi Nagon, Tamulipara, Talipara and Dawkapara under Mangaldai Revenue Circle�with the guidance of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Darrang.

�The knowledge gained within the four walls of a classroom is of no use if it is not transformed into reality through practical action. It gives perfectness, self confidence in developing personality in every sphere of life. Under this programme, the students have to stay in villages to transform their knowledge in the farmers� field,� said MK Chouhan, senior scientist and Head of KVK, Darrang.

�The students also study the socio-cultural and economic status of the farming community of the villages,� Chouhan added. As part of �this year�s programme, the group of students conducted �bench mark survey of each village and started their activities through hands-on services.

The students demonstrated fertilizer application methods in various crops like coconut, rice, lemon etc., with active participation of farmers of the villages. They also demonstrated various grafting methods like T-budding, air-layering, leaf-bud cutting etc., of horticultural crops. On Sunday, they took part in the demonstration activity of Mechanical Transplanting of Rice (MTR) variety Dishang, which can be transplanted as pre-flood and post-flood situation. The students themselves raised the rice seedlings in Mat Nursery in collaboration with a few local progressive farmers including Konkon Medhi, Nabajyoti Deka, Rajib Deka and Udhab Medhi. During the MTR activity, Head of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Darrang explained the importance of mechanization in agriculture for increasing the income of farmers and to reduce the drudgery of the farm women in particular.
